10: The Town Sign
Overview
Erected in 1969 by the Women’s Institute in their Jubilee Year, the sign was designed and carved by Harry Carter of Swaffham. It has since been replaced by a copy in more durable materials. On one side it depicts Robert Kett, leader of the 1549 Rebellion, and on the other a wood-turner. The Arms of the town, a wooden spoon and a spigot, appear on both
sides, as Wymondham was famous as a centre of the wood-turning industry. The original town sign can now be seen in the courtyard garden of Wymondham Heritage Museum (The Bridewell).
