18: Vicar Street
Overview
This street of great charm and character contains a fine group of houses and cottages dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. Among many details which catch the eye are the fine Georgian doorways and rubble walls, one incorporating material from the Abbey. The stone arch to the gateway leading into the vicarage garden is reputed to have come from the house of Robert Kett. Opposite, the large house called Abbotsford was used as a hospital during World War One. Further along on the left No 10, Conon House was once the White Swan Public House.
