3: Bridewell Street

Overview

Most of the present buildings were erected immediately after the fire of 1615. The Manor House, next to the Queen’s Head, belonged to Richard Lincoln, a wool-chapman, from 1616 until his death in 1634.

The Latin inscription over the door, translated, reads: “My servant is not a dormouse, nor is the host a leech” and was originally displayed on the Queen’s Head.

Notice particularly the narrowness of the street between the jettied houses, and the original moulded door cases and heavy chimney stacks. It is worth remembering that this narrow street was part of the main London to Norwich road until 1959.

WALK >> follow the road in a straight line as it becomes Elm Terrace until you’re facing the Wymondham Heritage Museum. Turn left onto the Norwich Road and turn into the drive of the Roman Catholic Parish Church.
