Wymondham Abbey is one of the grandest religious buildings in East Anglia. It is a magnificent Norman church, originally established in 1107 as part of a monastic foundation. It was later enlarged and embellished with a particularly fine angel roof. The famous gilded altar screen by Sir Ninian Comper is among its many splendours. The unusual twin towers are a prominent local landmark.
But at Wymondham Abbey, we are more than just an ancient treasure chest. We are an active and lively parish church, with services every day and a variety of activities and community events throughout the year. Please explore our website for more information, then come and explore the church for yourself.
We are open most days of the year. We have welcomers on duty and a well-stocked shop on site. Our Lottery-funded Abbey Experience includes displays and other new facilities, such as refreshments and a comfortable seating area, ensuring your visit will be enjoyable and memorable. We have I-Spy trails and quiz's for children of all ages to enjoy. We are truly a place for welcome, worship and wonder.
However, a church is far more than a beautiful building. The Abbey is a living community which seeks to celebrate God’s love for His people in so many different ways. Through our worship, friendship and social activities we try to live out the Gospel in all its fullness. We offer a warm welcome to people from all over the world, as well as from ‘just around the corner’. The Abbey is also a popular venue for concerts, exhibitions and fayres, as well as being a ‘living history’ resource for our local schools.
This is our main service of the week, with the liturgy taken from Common Worship. This service is rich in symbolism with the liturgy, singing, incense and the colours of the vestments worn by the clergy all giving glory to God. The service usually lasts just over an hour. Children are fully incorporated into the service: we include Godly Play into the liturgy and have a constructive playtime for our younger members. Stay for refreshments and a chat afterwards.
Using the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, this service lasts around 45 minutes. We include hymns and a short sermon. On the first Sunday of the month the Parish Choir usually sings at this service.
Weekdays, this service takes place in the Lady Chapel and lasts about 15 minutes. The service is said, in the style of monastic worship, and includes psalms, prayers and a bible reading.
This is a short said service of Holy Communion, which takes place in the Lady Chapel using Common Worship liturgy.
We also have Abbey Hall that is available to hire between 8am and 10pm for other activities and events outside of Community group bookings at a rate of £12 per hour.
