Museum opens for the new season

Date for your diary. Wymondham Heritage Museum opens for the new season on March 9th. Come along and explore the history of the town and the surrounding district.

The museum offers an all round family visit. For the adults there are range of displays including the town’s lost pubs, memories of The Regal Cinema and the recreated grocery and hardware stores.  Find out what was in shopping baskets at the turn of the last century.

Follow the story of town’s most famous citizen, Robert Kett. How he led a revolt against land enclosures.

Also featured are the struggles and sacrifices local people made for the war effort, the impact of the Americans when they arrived in the town and the recreated Anderson Shelter with it’s commentary bringing to life what it was like as the bombs rained down. Discover the history of The Bridewell from it’s first role as a house of correction in 1619; the life of the prisoner followed by it’s later use as a police station then a magistrate’s court.

For the children there is mini market stall, dressing up in Victorian costume, digging for artefacts in the sandpit and operating the Gane machine in the Brushroom that inserted the bristles into the stock.

New for 2026, it’s back in time for school with our new display commemorating the 150th anniversary of the opening of Browick Road and Spooner Row Schools. Come and learn about the history of education in the town.

Round off your visit in The Bridewell Tearoom where you can enjoy homemade cakes and scones with a refreshing cuppa. If it’s warm and sunny you can relax with your snack in the courtyard garden where the restored original town sign watches over the attractive borders. Admission to the Tearoom is free, normal charges for the museum.
