12: The Chapel, of St. Thomas à Becket – Becket’s Chapel
Overview
Founded in 1174 by William d’Albini, son of the founder of the Abbey, most of the present building dates from c.1400. The blocked arch on the outer wall once led into a south transept. In the 15th century it was a meeting place of the Wattlefield or Middleton Guild. It was converted into a Grammar School (see fleur-de-lys crest over door) by Elizabeth I in 1561 and endowed from confiscated guild and monastic property, serving in this capacity until c.1835. It housed the public library from 1948 to 2008. Today, the Grade 1 listed Chapel is an important venue and home to Wymondham Arts from May to November, a role which it has performed since the library moved out. It has recently undergone a programme of restoration and repair under its new owners Historic Norfolk.
