7: Fairland Street

Overview

Known in the 19th century as Fairstead Street, its appearance has changed little during the last 200 years. Myhill’s Pet & Garden shop was originally the Woolpack public house. Further along on the opposite side of the street in the yard beside the Café/Diner, one can glimpse a pair of 17th century cottages. Almost opposite, on the left, is the former blacksmith’s workshop, now a private house, where Edwin Gooch – Politician and Champion of agricultural workers was born. Facing Friarscroft Lane is a much decorated Victorian building with a glazed medallion over the florid stone capitals of the doorway.

WALK >> turn left onto Friarscroft Lane and stop at the first right hand turn looking down Brewery Lane.
