8: Brewery Lane

Overview

Viewed from Friarscroft Lane, Brewery Lane has a picturesque quality and has considerable historic value as the last remaining example of ‘medieval rear-servicing’.

This means that people had the front of the house for posh, but the back of the house was for the servicing of the household and, more importantly, for the trade that was carried out from the home.

Working from home is nothing new – working away from the home in factories and later offices only came in with the Industrial Revolution.

The stores and outhouses of the properties on the Market Place and Fairland Street, though no older than the late 17th century, are suggestive of the medieval arrangements behind houses in Wymondham.

Notice the Baptist Church on the left in Queen Street completed in 1911. Just beyond the cross-roads, on the right, is the site of the former Cann and Clarke’s brewery, the last in the town.

WALK >> to the end of Brewery Lane and turn left onto Chandler’s Hill, where you will find the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Garden, continue and then turn right onto Friarscroft until you are at the junction with Damgate Street.
