9: Damgate Street
Overview
‘Gate’ is the old Norse word for street, so this should be known simply as Damgate. There are many historic buildings to admire all along this ancient road.
First, at the junction with Damgate you can see the Damgate Bridge to the left. On this left hand corner is also the 17th century Sun Inn, now a private house, is notable for its Dutch gable and thatched roof. Turn right to walk up Damgate until you reach the Masonic Hall originally the Wesleyan Chapel. Across the bungalow roofs opposite, there is a fine view of the Abbey Tower.
WALK>> continue to the end of Damgate and turn right where you’ll see the Wymondham sign on the junction with Church Street.
B THE RIVER TIFFEY SHORTCUT
Between Damgate and Cavick Road Damgate Bridge spans the River Tiffey where once the original dam served the Abbey’s mill. From Damgate Bridge follow the attractive riverside walk next to the River Tiffey to Cavick Road bridge.
From here you’ll see the heritage railway and, on land to the left beyond the tree belt, the location for Wymondham’s largest employer of the 20th century; the Briton Brush factory. Rejoin the trail on Becketswell Road.
