Wymondham Heritage Museum

Description

Housed in the town’s historic Bridewell, Wymondham Heritage Museum offers an all-round family visit. The displays and exhibitions take you through a journey to discover the town’s past. Travel from prehistoric times, the Iron Age, the Romans and Saxons to medieval Wymondham and the early 20th century. Find out about Wymondham’s great fire in 1615, the ancient Market Cross. What was life like on the farm before mechanisation? Learn the history of the iconic Bridewell. How, in 1785, it became the model prison for “Houses of Correction” throughout the country and in America. Go down to the spooky dungeon and see what life was like for a prisoner 200 years ago.

Step back in time and see what the townsfolk had in their shopping baskets 100 years ago in two recreated shops, a grocer and a hardware store.

Follow the story of the town’s most famous citizen, Robert Kett. Why did this yeoman farmer lead a rebellion against land enclosures? Learn about brush-making, once the town’s major industry.

Lots of activities for the children. Dress as a Victorian character, have a go at the quiz and win a prize, operate a 1960's switchboard and do a Time Team dig in the sandbox.

For those children who may not be comfortable with all that’s going on around them, sensory bags are available. Included in these are ear defenders, a selection of sensory toys and a “feelings fan” for children to point to how they feel.

When you’ve seen all that pop into The Bridewell Tearoom for a refreshing drink and a slice of homemade cake or a freshly baked scone. Assistance and well-behaved dogs welcome.

We welcome group visits from clubs, societies, primary and secondary schools and youth groups. Visits can include a guided tour of the museum and a variety of activities such as school project work relating to the town’s history. Email groupvisits@thewhm.org.uk
