6: The Fairland
Overview
This grassy open area on the edge of the old town was once the site of thrice-yearly fairs, a right granted to Wymondham by King Stephen in 1135.
The town cattle pound was also here.
The United Reform Church along Fairland Hill side of the green was originally founded in 1652. The present church was built in 1715 on land given by Roger Gay and extended in 1815. Wooden Doric columns support the gallery inside the church. The church hall next door was originally the nineteenth-century British School.
